The growing importance of e-commerce and the digital economy

Electronic commerce and the rise of the digital economy are rapidly transforming the way in which people and business interact.

New opportunities are emerging for technological leaps, productivity gains, the growth of new sectors and more trade. But digital transformations also bring various challenges and costs.

Coping with digital transformations requires more effective collaboration, and African governments are increasingly recognizing the need to enhance the readiness of their economies to participate in e-commerce and the digital economy.

Many African countries, and especially the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), face a range of barriers to the adoption and effective use of digital technologies.

The UNCTAD eCommerce Week, organized since 2015, has become the leading forum for key stakeholders from the public and the private sectors, as well as civil society, to discuss the global development implications of e-commerce and the digital economy and related policy challenges.

Now for the first time, UNCTAD is proud to announce a regional eCommerce Week.

The Africa eCommerce Week

The Africa eCommerce Week will be jointly organized with the African Union and the European Union. The event will by hosted by the Government of Kenya and implemented in collaboration with partners of the eTrade for all initiative.

Under the theme ‘Empowering African economies in the digital era’, the Africa eCommerce Week will examine ways to enhance the ability of African countries to engage in and benefit from e-commerce and the evolving digital economy;

It will bring together Ministers, other senior government representatives, the private sector, civil society and international organizations for a week-long dialogue to identify innovative ways for shaping the African digital economy.  There will be High-Level Segments, thematic sessions, various workshops or “labs” on cutting edge technologies in collaboration with business; as well as a space for external public and private partners to convene and network.

Participants will be offered space to:
  • Share: bring all the voices to the table for an inclusive, multi-stakeholder dialogue at the national and sub-regional level.
  • Learn: hear from regional and international partners which good practices have been successfully implemented in the various policy areas.
  • Connect & Network: meet local and international partners in one place and take projects forward.

Financial contributions from the European Commission, the Government of Kenya and the Germany Agency for International Cooperation are gratefully acknowledged.

Further information regarding the Africa E-Commerce Week will be made available on this webpage.
