Presentation on Circular Economy and Trade at PUC-Minas University
10 - 11 April 2018
Poços de Caldas, Brazil

Key Issues

Following invitation by the International Relations department of PUC-MG Poços de Caldas, Mr. Henrique Pacini from UNCTAD attended two days of activities discussing ongoing challenges to global environmental diplomacy, such as the relation between international trade and the circular economy, as well as a roundtable discussion with students and faculty from the International Relations programme. The activities were part of the university's international outreach and guest speakers programme, which routinely brings practitioners from international organizations to share experiences with students seeking related professional paths.  PUC Minas holds a United Nations simulation programme among its students, who are also mentored to understand the evolving complexities of the global political economy and international relations, with the goal of guiding them for impactful carreer choices in the field. More than 100 students and faculty attended the events.

Mr. Carol Pavese, Coordinator of the International Relations Programme, mentioned the importance of environmental aspects of development, such as recycling, reusage and collaborative economy businesses for the carreer of students once they graduate.  The cases of Tanzania, where UNCTAD participates in a trade-cluster project, and Angola, which is currently benefitting from an NGER, were given to illustrate the practical work of the organization on field projects which promote clean economic diversification.

The events were part of UNCTAD's work on Circular Economy, which include an ongoing cooperation with the Ellen McArthur Foundation, UNDP, Chatham House, Shifting Paradigms, the OECD and the UNFCC. A policy brief on Circular Economy and Trade is expected for mid 2018.
