UNCTAD launches an Online Course on Non-Tariff Measures and Data Collection
11 July 2019
UNCTAD
UNCTAD will provide its annual online course on Non-Tariff Measures and Data Collection to government officials, researchers, and representatives of the private sector worldwide from August 12 to 27 September 2019.

Non-tariff measures (NTMs) are: "Policy measures, other than ordinary customs tariffs, that can potentially have an economic effect on international trade in goods".

They encompass a broad range of policy measures that are, more than ever, at the centre of global trade, affecting some 90% of world trade and all areas of our everyday lives.

Meeting these complex and often opaque rules requires national and regional financial and technical resources, as well as a well-functioning multilateral trading system.

Understanding the uses and implications of NTMs is essential for the formulation and implementation of effective development strategies to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, and to use NTMs in a way that carefully balances the reduction in trade costs against the preservation of public objectives.

The Online Course on Non-Tariff Measures and Data Collection constitutes a useful base of technical knowledge and skills for policymakers, researchers and trade practitioners working with, and collecting data on, NTMs.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with the knowledge and tools needed to identify, classify and collect information about national NTMs, as part of the international effort to improve access and increase transparency with regard to these measures.
