The 2022 edition was held under the theme “Data and Digitalization for Development”,  and looked at ways to strengthen the ability of developing countries, including least developed countries (LDCs), to continue engaging in and benefiting from e-commerce and the digital economy, to build more resilient and inclusive societies in a dramatically different post-COVID-19 environment, with a focus on data and cross-border data flows and the crucial role they play in economic and social development.

Outcome Report

With 100+ sessions followed by 2600+ participants from 139 countries, the eCommerce Week looked in depth at key digital issues as they related to the overarching theme of this edition. In focus: selected sessions

A number of High Level Sessions took place throughout the week. Ministers, CEOs, heads of UN agencies and renown thought-leaders debated the Data and Digitalization for Development theme from various angles.

This year’s eCommerce Week also featured 4 ‘In Conversation with’ Sessions, an innovative format to learn more about the issues at stake and to get a glimpse about the “person beyond the role”. Vint Cerf, Google’s Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Gerry McGovern, author of World Wide Waste and Consultant at Customer Carewords, Helianti Hilman, Founder and Chairperson of Javara and eTrade for Women Advocate, and Mona Ataya, Founder and CEO of MumzWorld, and eTrade for Women Advocate, were selected.

A topical theme at a crucial juncture

The 2022 edition will be held under the theme “Data and Digitalization for Development”, putting a special emphasis on data and cross-border data flows and the crucial role they play in economic and social development.

The connectivity-related digital divide is being heightened by an emerging data divide, reflecting the wide differences that exist between and within countries to harness data.

Countries with limited capacities to turn data into digital intelligence and business opportunities, and use them for economic and social development, are at a clear disadvantage.

The event will also shine a light on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted digital transformations globally.

A key event now online

To reach a wider audience, and to adapt to a new reality and maximize flexibility, the eCommerce Week 2022 will take place mainly online. Only a handful of high-level events will take on a hybrid format and be held simultaneously in the Palais des Nations in Geneva and online.

As the leading global forum for decision makers, experts, leaders and key stakeholders from all backgrounds, including the private sector and civil society, the event will offer a unique platform to:

  • Discuss ways to reframe and broaden the international policy debate on harnessing cross-border flows of digital data through the development lens.
  • Hear from leading partners and stakeholders about critical challenges to harnessing data for value creation in the digital economy.
  • Learn more about a whole-of-society approach to digital transformation.

Throughout the week, a special emphasis will be given to concrete and actionable solutions to pressing issues related to the digital transformation of our economies.
