Global Product Safety in action: Bringing the UN Principles on Consumer Product Safety to life
In December 2025, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Consumer Product Safety, establishing a global framework to strengthen the protection of consumers from unsafe products, whether sold online or offline.
The principles reaffirm the right of all consumers to safe products and call for a high level of protection, particularly for vulnerable and disadvantaged consumers and in countries with less developed product safety frameworks. Unsafe products can cause injuries, economic loss and diminished trust in markets, undermining sustainable development.
As part of International Product Safety Week 2026, the European Commission and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) are organizing their 7th joint Workshop, focusing on how to turn the UN Principles into action.
The session will provide a preview of the forthcoming UNCTAD Handbook on Consumer Product Safety, being developed to support the practical implementation of the Principles, and discuss concrete experiences and approaches to strengthening consumer product safety across different regions. The discussion and approaches presented during the session will also feed into the finalization of the Handbook, helping to ensure that it reflects practical experiences, lessons learned and effective approaches from around the world.
