Developing Principles for Fair Online Platform Work

17 April 2018
13:30 - 03:00 hrs. Room XXV
Geneva
, Switzerland

This two-part workshop will discuss fair and decent work on online platforms.

The first part involves presentations on the key challenges in this kind of work and presents the idea of the Fairwork Foundation: an organization designed to offer certification to platforms who achieve minimum standards.

The presentations introduce the following questions:

  • What are the key characteristics of decent platform work?
  • What conditions should always be in place for platform workers?
  • What conditions should never be in place for platform workers?
  • How should these standards vary around the world?

The second part of the workshop brings together ministers, policy makers, academics, trade unionists, and platform representatives.

Through a facilitated consensus decision making process, the participants will discuss what a set of principles and criteria would entail for online platform work.

The workshop provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to contribute to an important debate on online platform work, while collaboratively shaping the Fairwork Foundation at this formative phase.
