How to Overcome Barriers to Cross-border Digital Payments

16 April 2018
05:00 - 06:30 hrs. Room XXV
Geneva
, Switzerland

The ability to make and receive payments is critical to be able to participate in the e-commerce marketplace.

While significant effort is rightly focused on ensuring financial inclusion, in order to have a domestic account for payments, international payments are also critical to create a global marketplace.

In addition, while it is often possible for customers to sign up to buy using international platforms such as PayPal or Google Play, it is harder for vendors to sign up to sell on those platforms in many emerging countries.

At least part of the problem comes from increased obligations on financial institutions for transparency and requirements to 'know your customer' before sending international payments, and the resulting trend for banks to 'de-risk' by ending financial relationships in a number of countries.

The E-Commerce week provides a unique opportunity to bring together the relevant stakeholders in international Geneva.

Our workshop will include speakers from the largest international payment platforms and retailers, including PayPal, Alibaba, Amazon, and Google Play, to discuss the opportunities and challenges of international payments, from the international organisations including UNCTAD, ITC, and WTO to discuss the impact on commerce and trade, and representatives from financial institutions, including banks, Basel, Ministries of Finance, and the IMF to present the compliance issues that are resulting in 'de-risking'.

Through presentations and discussions, we hope to identify key issues, potential solutions, and their impact.
