ICT statistics at the UN Statistical Commission 2014

04 - 07 March 2014
Conference Room 2, UN Secretariat Building
New York
, United States of America

During its 45th session from 4 to 7 March 2014, the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) will discuss information and communications technology (ICT) statistics. UNCTAD will be represented by the ICT Analysis Section of the Division on Technology and Logistics.

The Division on Technology and Logistics has developed information economy statistics within the framework of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development. At the 45th session of the Statistical Commission, the Partnership will present its progress report on the measurement of ICT (E/CN.3/2014/8). The UNSC will discuss ICT statistics under agenda item 3(g) on the morning of Wednesday, 5 March 2014.

The 45th session of the Commission is of particular importance to the work on ICT statistics, since the Partnership is asking countries to:
(a) Review and comment on the progress made on ICT statistics;
(b) Endorse the revised core list of ICT indicators on household ICT access and individual ICT use;
(c) Review and endorse the recommendations proposed to improve ICT statistics;
(d) Encourage increased national coordination in the area of ICT statistics; and
(e) Express support for the continued work of the Partnership.

UNCTAD, in collaboration with the Partnership, is currently developing new indicators on gender and ICT, and on international trade in ICT services. The work on capacity building on information economy statistics, including the development of new indicators, is made possible by a trust fund financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
