Clarifying BioTrade and ABS - What countries need to avoid while developing national ABS regimes
Trade in bioresources and commercial utilization of genetic resources are distinct concepts. However, a significant amount of confusion exists among those focusing on developing and implementing national policies and legal frameworks on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing (ABS). Such confusion is clearly compromising effective implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.
With dozens of countries currently beginning to develop national ABS frameworks, this Webinar will provide conceptual clarity on how trade in biological resources is different from commercial utilization of genetic resources, current implementation problems in countries that seem to have not differentiated the two, ways and means to distinguish the concepts in the interest of conservation and sustainable management of resources.
The lead presenters of this Webinar, Dr. Balakrishna Pisupati from UNEP and Mr. David Vivas Eugui of United Nations Conference on Trade and Environment (UNCTAD), have significant experience working on issues of ABS and BioTrade and will provide the participants with information on how to develop ABS frameworks that uphold the spirit and objective of the Nagoya Protocol on ABS.
