Ecuador validates gaps, priorities, and recommendations to strengthen its sustainability reporting infrastructure
The UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in coordination with the Ministry of Economic and Productive Development of Ecuador, hosted a National Validation Workshop on strengthening Ecuador’s national sustainability reporting infrastructure that took place in Quito, Ecuador, from 7-8 September 2026. The meeting was organized in the context of the United Nations Development Account Project on Strengthening sustainability reporting to foster sustainable finance and investment in selected developing countries in Asia and Latin America.
During his opening remarks, Ms. Magdalena Vicuna, Undersecretary of Governmental Accounting, Ministry of Economic and Productive Development of Ecuador, said, “...The ADT revised in 2025 allows for an integrated assessment of national capacity regarding sustainability and SDG reporting for the public and private sectors, to provide governments with guidance on how to develop public policies that help strengthen their sustainability reporting infrastructure...”. Ms. Nan Li Collins, Director of the Investment and Enterprise Division of UNCTAD, addressed participants by video; she explained that “...UNCTAD will work with national and international experts to develop a tailored action plan. This will strengthen regulatory frameworks, institutions, and human capacities needed for high-quality sustainability reporting. We remain committed to supporting Ecuador on this journey.”
The workshop validated the results of Ecuador’s national assessment conducted using the Accounting Development Tool and presented the findings of the Note on the Status of Sustainability Reporting in Ecuador. UNCTAD also introduced its Guidance on Core Indicators and its Policy Guide Tackling the sustainability reporting challenge. Participants agreed on a preliminary list of gaps, priorities, and recommendations which will serve as the basis for developing a tailored action plan to strengthen Ecuador’s financial and sustainability reporting infrastructure.
The National Workshop was attended by 40 participants representing key institutions involved in financial and sustainability reporting in Ecuador, including stakeholders from the public and private sectors and civil society.
