Addressing non-tariff measures is important for sustainable development.
Getting market entry depends increasingly on compliance with trade regulatory measures such as sanitary requirements and goods standards. Evidence suggests that these NTMs account for a large share of trade costs, representing challenges for exporters, importers and policy makers. LDCs are often disproportionately affected.
NTMs can also enhance trade and they have important non-trade objectives such as protecting the health and the environment. These beneficial aspects of NTMs are directly linked to the sustainable development goals that are currently negotiated at the UN.
The session will discuss new findings about the importance of NTMs for least-developed and developing countries' trade and development opportunities. Potential policy responses at the national, regional and multilateral level will be discussed.
