From 23 to 28 September 2013, UNCTAD will conduct two training courses for Judges and Commissioners for SADC countries' competition authorities.
Training of commissioners at the regional level is one of the recommendations of the Tripartite Peer Review of competition law and policy of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of the training course is to build capacity of judges and commissioners to enforce competition policy in their respective countries using both the economic underpinning of national competition laws in and the legal approach.
The training will the following topics (i) introduction to the legal and economic aspects of competition law enforcement, (ii) the use of economic evidence in competition cases, (iii) procedural aspects of competition cases, (iv) sanctions and remedies and (v) judicial review of competition cases.
Members of the legal profession and the bench will improve their understanding of competition cases handling and adjudication in the context of globalization and changing markets. They will also exchange experience from their respective jurisdictions.
Participants include Judges and commissioners from the SADC region. Experts are drawn from a judicial, academic and competition enforcement background from UNCTAD and the region.
