This seminar will address the issue of how firms in developing countries can functionally upgrade their positions within global value chains (GVCs).
Research shows that upgrading requires building stronger innovation systems and capabilities. In addition, certain patterns in the integration of firms into GVCs may be associated with functional upgrading.
This implies that building local innovation systems is key to enabling the upgrading of domestic firms and the creation of higher levels of local value, while integrating into GVCs.
The seminar will explore the linkages between GVCs and innovation systems.
