Enhancing the "Sustainable Smart Port" status of Tanger Med
From 23 to 26 September, UNCTAD will convene stakeholder consultations in Tangier as part of the Sustainable Smart Port (SSP) assessment of Tanger Med. Using UNCTAD’s methodology, the assessment evaluates the port’s readiness to:
- Scale up the use, production, distribution of alternative energy sources (renewable energy)
- Enhance energy efficiency.
As an integral part of the methodology, the consultations will begin with bilateral meetings and conclude on Friday, 26 September, with a joint session bringing together all key stakeholders. Their objective is to:
- Discuss and validate preliminary findings of ongoing research
- Collect additional insights to shape recommendations for capacity-building activities and advance SSP reforms
- Ensure that proposed solutions are relevant, practical, and aligned with national priorities for energy transition and port development
Key stakeholders participating in these dialogues include, among others, the Tanger Med Port Authority, Tanger Med Utility, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Directorate of Ports and the Maritime Public Domain, shipping lines and terminal operators.
