06 - 08 February 2019
Tanzania Ports Authority
Dar Es Salaam
, United Republic of Tanzania

In the framework of the UNCTAD Port Management Programme (PMP), Mark Assaf, along with port experts from Dublin Port Company and Ghana, will conduct an assessment mission at Tanzania Ports Authority from 6– 8 February 2019, in preparation for the launch of PMP Cycle 3 in Tanzania.

The agenda includes meetings with the Managing Director and senior management of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to update on the PMP’s main features and discuss the Road Map (Action Plan) for Tanzania. A visit of the Port of Dar Es Salaam and general meeting with the representatives of the port community, including debriefing of the TPA PMP focal point will also take place. Finally briefing with the Irish Embassy in Dar Es Salaam.

Tanzania is a returning member of the Port Management Programme which has been active from 2007-2013. It will resume Cycle 3 with the delivery of Module 1, Semester 1, 2019. Each training cycle lasts 16 to 24 months and comprises 240 hours of in-class training and a final thesis. The course deliveries are led by UNCTAD and international instructors (Irish port experts), as well as local senior managers who have completed the training-of-trainers workshop. This strategy highlights the uniqueness and strength of the TrainForTrade Port Management Programme in fostering local ownership to reinforce its impact and ensure sustainability. Local ownership of the programme is achieved through a financing scheme that requires the participating ports to provide the majority of the programme's funds, and by gradually shifting responsibility for implementing the programme from UNCTAD to the participating ports.
