UNCTAD Feature Lecture: Debt Issues in Low-Income Countries Progress and Remaining Challenges

12 April 2012
14:00 - 13:59 hrs. Room XXV, Palais des Nations
Geneva
, Switzerland

In cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the United States of America, UNCTAD is hosting a lecture and interactive discussion to be delivered by Mr. Thomas Engle, Director, United States Department of State, Office of Monetary Affairs, and United States Representative to the Paris Club.

Many low-income countries enjoy sharply reduced external debt burdens, thanks to the success of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, improved debt management by governments, and application of the Debt Sustainability Framework by the international financial institutions. At the same time, some low-income countries have growing domestic and multilateral debt levels as they try to finance development and meet current costs.

The speaker will examine the changing structure of low-income country debt and related challenges facing the international community.

Refreshments and sandwiches will be served.
