UNCTAD and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), with the collaboration of the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), are responding to the COVID-19 crisis through the implementation of the project on the "Global Initiative towards post-COVID-19 resurgence of the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) sector."
The mandate for this project derives from Resolution 74/27 of the General Assembly that sets out to coordinate the UN-wide response to COVID-19. Within this project, UNCTAD and ECA are delivering a regional dialogue on the role of Competition Policy in supporting the economic recovery of Micro, Small and Medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) post COVID-19. The regional dialogue envisages to steer the conversation on the impact of COVID19 on MSMEs; get an understanding of the state of affairs in light of market concentrations resulting from the crisis; shape recovery strategies post crisis; and discuss the relevance of competition policies to contribute effectively to post crisis recovery of the MSMEs.
This event will provide an opportunity to present and discuss: the UNCTAD report on how COVID-19 Affects MSME access to markets and competition; SMEs challenges in the region during the pandemic; and the preliminary findings of the report on the SMEs challenges in South Africa and the role of competition authority in addressing them. This interactive event will prioritise sharing experiences and best practices that have emerged during this crisis among representatives and officials of government MSME bodies, as well as competition agency representatives.
