Cocoa industry reform needed to stop farmers from being left behind

Cocoa farmers in some of the world's poorest countries are scarcely benefitting from a value chain which sees goods made from their crops, such as chocolate and cocoa butter-based cosmetics, sold for a premium in developed economies, a new UNCTAD report has found.

The Commodities and Development Report 2015, entitled "Smallholder Farmers and Sustainable Commodity Development" was launched on 17 December 2015 on the margins of the tenth Ministerial Conference of the WTO taking place in Nairobi. The presentation of the report was preceded by an introduction by Joakim Reiter, UNCTAD's Deputy Secretary-General.

The government of Benin has begun implementing a Tier II project on Strengthening Productive and Trade Capacities of Benin, under the aegis of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) of which UNCTAD plays an active role. The implementation phase was launched in Benin's seat of government, Cotonou, at a ceremony on 11 June 2015.
