African Entrepreneurship Policy Forum, 13–14 December 2017 (Kigali, Rwanda)

The Forum organized jointly by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) and UNCTAD gave the stakeholders opportunities to analyze the current eco-system for entrepreneurship in Africa, express and validate policy options related to entrepreneurship.

The forum attracted over 120 delegates comprised of government officials, industry and finance executives, entrepreneurs, sector associations, business development service providers and members of development community.

The Forum featured sessions on the six areas of UNCTAD’s EPF:

  1. Formulating National Strategy

  2. Optimizing the Regulatory Environment

  3. Enhancing Entrepreneurship Education and Development

  4. Facilitating Technology Exchange and Innovation

  5. Improving Access to Finance

  6. Promoting Awareness and Networking

In each session, key speakers presented best practices and current actions in their countries, with a focus on regional value chains. This was followed by a group discussion.

The event was highly appreciated by the participants and many requested to have such regional forums on a regular basis.

African countries and many of the participants expressed interest on further cooperation both on the EPF and Empretec in the country and in the region, including UNDP Rwanda, UNDP Africa Regional office, Rwanda Development Board, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Burundi.

At regional level ECOWAS and COMESA expressed interest in collaboration.
