UNCTAD and the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop capacity building activities on issues related to trade, investment, environment, gender and development for the benefits of developing countries in Africa.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD and Prof. Bonard Mwape, Director General of ESAMI on 19th February 2015 in Arusha, Tanzania, is expected to foster the collaboration between two organizations in carrying out trade and development-related capacity building activities.
ESAMI is an inter-governmental regional organization based in Arusha, Tanzania. Its mandate is to improve the performance and management effectiveness of public, private and international organizations in Africa through capacity building activities. In particular, one of its training centres - the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa (trapca) is specialized in delivering trade policy-related capacity building activities in Sub-Saharan African developing countries.
The Memorandum of Understanding creates a framework for future collaboration between the two entities and is expected to increase joint capacity building activities and policy dialogues in areas of mutual interest including trade facilitation, trade policy, trade and investment, trade in commodities and development of commodity markets, and mainstreaming gender in trade and development. The collaboration between UNCTAD and ESAMI is mutually beneficial and will allow the two organizations to more efficiently use their resources, knowledge and network.
