Uganda officials attend training workshop on debt management

27 August 2012

Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Uganda are currently attending a 9-day workshop in Kampala on domestic debt operations and management organised by UNCTAD in close cooperation with the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI).

The objective of this workshop is to assist the Government of Uganda in its efforts to expand its capacity in domestic debt management and issuance.

By increasing issuance in domestic currency the Government can achieve a better match between the structure of its debt and
revenues.

The workshop is financed by the U.N. Development Account Project on Strengthening Capacity for Effective Asset and Liability Management in National Debt Management Offices.

Trainers from UNCTAD, MEFMI, the Central Bank of Kenya and the Central Bank of Zambia, conducted the workshop which will close on Tuesday, August 28.

The programme, jointly developed by UNCTAD, MEFMI and the Uganda Ministry of Finance started with a discussion of general issues on domestic debt management and will culminate with a practical exercise in which seminar participants will simulate the whole process of bond issuance and then prepare an action plan for reform of domestic public debt management in Uganda.

UNCTAD staff/trainers at the workshop were Ugo Panizza, Gabor Piski, and Ngoc Nguyen.
