Claudia Lima Marques is the Dean and Full Professor of Private International Law at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil (Private International Law, Law of International Relations, National and International Consumer, Environmental Law, Contracts and Child Law). Director of the CDEA-Center for European and German Studies, from DAAD, at UFRGS-PUCRS.
She holds a PhD. from Heidelberg University (Thesis on the Hague Convention on international adoption and child protection), a LL.M. from Tübingen University (Subject: The rights of the national mothers and fathers in an international adoption of Brazilian Childs) and a Diplom in European Integration (an interdisciplinary Diplom in History, Economic and in EU, Public and Private International Law) from the Saarland University.
Chair of the Committee on International Protection of Consumers, International Law Association, London. Director of the Deutsch-Lusitanische Juristenvereinigung-DLJV (Heidelberg). Director of the International Law Association- Branch Brazil and at the Board of Director of the IACL-International Association of Consumer Law (Brussels).
Former President of ASADIP- Asociación Americana de Derecho Internacional Privado (Paraguay) and of the BRASILCON-Brazilian Institute of Consumer Law and Policy (Brasilia). She was twice Dean of the LLM. And PhD Department of the Law School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Chair of the Research Network German-Brazilian Consumer Law (DAAD-CAPES) and founder of the Brazilian Research Network of Researchers in International Law (UFRGS).
She holds two doctor honoris causa titles, from the University of Giessen, Germany and the University of Savoie Mont Blanc, France. And she is invited Professor at the Université Savoie Mont Blanc (France), Universidad de Buenos Aires and Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Argentina), Universidad Católica del Uruguay (Uruguay) and it was invited Professor Université de Sorbonne, Paris 1 (France, 2003).
She was the first female professor from Brazil to hold a Cours at the Hague Conference of Private International Law (Subject: La protection de la partie faible en droit international privé -Consommateurs, petites entreprises et activités non lucratives), 2009. Invited Professor at the OAS Course of International Law, Rio de Janeiro.
She serves as General-Rapporteur of the Reform of the Brazilian Consumer Code and has been a consultant since 1991 at Mercosur, OAS, World Bank and the Brazilian Ministry of Justice on consumer and child law matters and in Private International Law issues, specially the protection of foreign tourists. She is the author of the Brazilian suggestions at the CIDIP VII on consumer protection and the Draft Convention on Protection of International Tourists and expert on the Negotiation of an Instrument to protect international tourists as consumer at the Hague Conference. Indicated as an arbitrator in the List of Arbiters of Mercosur and Chile-Brazil.
She has received the ‘Medalla Rosalba’ from Mercosur, the ‘Verdienst Kreuz’ from the German Gouvernment, the Prize Bunge ‘Life and Work on the Law Theorie and Tranformation of the Brazilian Law’, the Prize ‘Jabuti’ from the Brazilian Chamber of Book (Book: Private Law and the protection of vulnerable people, together with Bruno Miragem).
She is editor and author of important books in consumer law and Private International Law and has written numerous articles and chapters on conflicts of laws, contracts, consumer and child law published in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Panamá, Peru, Canada, USA, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain, UK, Italy, China and Japan.
