GENETIC RESOURCES TREATY: IMPLICATIONS FOR WTO NEGOTIATIONS DISCUSSED AT UNCTAD MEETING

Geneva, Switzerland, 20 September 2002

UNCTAD´s 11 September meeting on the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (see e-brief of 10 Sept.) provided Geneva-based delegates with an introduction to the Treaty and initiated a process of reflection on its implications for their work in the WTO and WIPO. Much discussion focused on the need to protect farmers´ rights, including in the context of meeting TRIPS Article 27.3(b) obligations.
A brief summary of discussions and several of the presentations and papers from the meeting are available at www.unctad.org/trade_env.
