GHANA MAKING COMEBACK IN ATTRACTING FDI, SAYS UNCTAD

Geneva, Switzerland, 4 November 2002

Ghana could regain its front-runner position for FDI in Africa, but it first needs to recover lost ground, says UNCTAD´s Investment Policy Review of Ghana, to be presented Tuesday, 5 November, at Geneva´s Palais des Nations (10 a.m., Room XXVI). The Review says that macroeconomic instability, weak infrastructure, low productivity and lack of local business partners are all deterring investment. However, the government´s resolve to create a "golden age" for business is being well received, and FDI inflows have returned to pre-crisis levels.

At tomorrow´s meeting, a government representative will discuss the priorities and reforms in place to improve the investment climate, followed by senior corporate executives from such companies as Unilever and Heinz Seafood Europe, who will share their experiences as investors in Ghana.

The presentation will take place back-to-back with an UNCTAD expert meeting on the "Development Dimension of FDI" (6-8 November, Palais des Nations), which will analyse the implications of international cooperation in the investment area.
