SUPACHAI PANITCHPAKDI NOMINATED TO HEAD UNCTAD

Geneva, Switzerland, 28 February 2005

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has today nominated Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand as Secretary-General of UNCTAD for a term of four years beginning 1 September. Dr. Supachai, the current Director General of the World Trade Organization and a former Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister of Thailand, also served as President of UNCTAD X (Bangkok, 2000).

The nomination will go to the UN General Assembly for confirmation.

If confirmed, he will succeed Rubens Ricupero (Brazil), who headed UNCTAD from September 1995 to September 2004.
