Three-week course begins for western Asian officials on «key issues on the international economic agenda»

Geneva, Switzerland, 18 October 2010

Beirut, 18 October -- Eighteen government officials will participate in a three-week course on "Key Issues on the International Economic Agenda" jointly staged by UNCTAD and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) at ESCWA´s Beirut office.

The programme, which runs through 5 November, is the 20th regional course on "key issues" carried out by UNCTAD. Participants are expected from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and Yemen.

The syllabus will draw on UNCTAD´s analytical work and on "lessons learned" from the organization´s technical cooperation programmes; and will include input from ESCWA and from national economic experts. The focus is on the links between trade, investment, finance, and development, with special attention to the situation in Western Asia.

The programme seeks to enhance understanding of the interrelationships among these issues and their relevance to the development strategies of Western Asian countries. It also aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design and put into operation effective trade and development policies.

Participants will be government officials from ministries and institutions who are involved in formulating and implementing trade and development policies.
