This report, the first comprehensive empirical analysis of the relationship between trade and poverty in the least developed countries (LDCs), shows that the positive effects of international trade are felt in very few LDCs and that export growth alone does not reduce poverty. For the first time as well, the report looks at the impact of HIV/AIDS and armed conflicts on LDC economies.
The report, a biannual publication, stresses the complex relationship between trade and development. It attempts to define how international trade can help reduce poverty in the LDCs and suggests what steps can be taken nationally and internationally to that end.
A ministerial debate on "Trade and Poverty", to be held in São Paulo, Brazil, on 13 June as part of UNCTAD XI (13-18 June), will draw on the report for its discussions. See http://www.unctadxi.org/ldcs .
