Greening the health supply chain: How to build a more sustainable, resilient and cost-efficient logistics to deliver vaccines and medicines in Latin America and the Caribbean?

The Regional Revolving Funds of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), with 60 years of collective experience, employ a pooled procurement strategy to deliver, in 3000 annual shipments, from over 150 suppliers of vaccines, medicines, and other health technologies, for millions of people living in 42 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This session features insights from experts on public health, logistics optimization and decarbonization, exploring challenges and actionable opportunities for PAHO, its Member States and partners, to build a more sustainable health supply chain for the region.

Daniel Rodríguez
Director, Procurement and Supply Management
Pan American Health Organization

Daniel Rodríguez is the Director of the Procurement and Supply Management at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

With a passion for driving excellence in supply chain strategies, team leadership, operations, and leveraging the use of digital technologies. In his current role, Daniel spearheads a dynamic team dedicated to the strategies and execution of procurement and logistics operations for the PAHO Regional Revolving Funds.

These efforts contribute to the efficient access to health supplies for public health programs of 42 countries and territories in the Americas and The Caribbean.

Daniel holds a degree in Industrial Engineer, complemented by a master's degree in business administration and in international logistics and supply chain strategy from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).

Carsten Hansen
Director
SourcingHaus Research & Consulting Group

Dr. Carsten Hansen is the Director of SourcingHaus Research and Consulting Group dedicated to supporting organizations in developing and implementing sustainable procurement and supply chain strategies. He is further Director for the Sustainable Public Procurement Accelerator Lab (SPP Lab) at the George Weston Centre for Sustainable Supply Chains, Schulich School of Business, collaborating with researchers, government, and industry leaders to deliver against the UN SDG Goal 12.7.  

He is also a Visiting Research Fellow, at the School of Management, Centre for Strategic Procurement and Supply Management at Cranfield University (UK), where he has published on sustainable procurement and supply chain risk management. 

He has served 20+ years in senior management positions with the United Nations (UN), latest as the Chief of Global Procurement Services at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and as Co-Chair of the Inter-Agency Working Group on Sustainable Procurement for the United Nations High-level Committee on Management (HLCM)

Enrique Romero
Logistics Optimization Specialist

Enrique Romero is a Logistics Optimization Specialist at Decisiones Logisticas Consulting Group.

He is an industrial engineer, with experience in logistics operations and supply chain strategy, and holds a Master of Science on innovation management, and a second Master of Science on logistics management, certified in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Lego Serious Play

He counts with more than 20 years of experience on Operations Management Strategy development, Simulation, Supply Chain Analytics focusing on supply chain risk and resilience analysis, and training on Operations Management and Innovation through gamification and simulation.
