South-South cooperation (SSC) is key to achieving the 2030 Agenda, alongside other international development support, but the only form of development cooperation lacking systematic data. Momentum to measure SSC is rapidly building following the endorsement of SDG indicator 17.3.1 in March 2022 at the UN Statistical Commission and its historic agreement on a UN Framework to Measure South-South Cooperation, developed by the South, for the South.
The UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), UN Regional Commissions and partners, building on global efforts of countries, are strengthening developing countries’ capacities to measure financial and non-financial modalities of SSC to better inform and target policy action. A Manual for the Framework to measure South-South cooperation has been developed with pioneering countries and partners, and first data have been reported.
This session will bring together experts from UNCTAD, as a custodian of the UN Framework, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the National Bureau of Statistics of Nigeria, to explore how data can better inform, support, and scale SSC initiatives.
This webinar will showcase innovative approaches and collaborative mechanisms to enable global reporting of South-South cooperation data:
- Bojan Nastav (UNCTAD) will present UNCTAD’s latest work on South-South cooperation data, including the development of the UN Framework to enable comparable global data and the Manual to guide countries, as well as findings from the first data of pioneering countries.
- Rolando Ocampo (ECLAC) will share regional experiences in compiling and harmonizing South-South cooperation statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Anne Ibrahim (National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria) will discuss national-level innovations in tracking and reporting South-South cooperation flows and partnerships.
