The workshop is organized by UNCTAD under the framework of the UNDA technical assistance project on 'Sustainable Smart Ports for African countries, including SIDS to “recover better” from COVID-19' (2022-2025). The workshop aims to build the capacity of national stakeholders to plan, implement, and finance the electrification of port equipment. The workshop follows up on the recommendations and priority action areas identified in Port Louis’s SSP Assessment report. Building capacity in port equipment electrification—powered by renewable energy— was identified and endorsed by stakeholders as a high-impact strategic priority.
Insights and learning provided as part of the workshop will equip key stakeholders with the tools and knowledge needed to make informed decisions and plans about port equipment electrification. This includes the ability to elaborate an action plan that guides future implementation of port equipment electrification and informs related investments while ensuring alignment with national sustainability goals.
Participation in the workshop is by invitation only and targets a wide range of stakeholders involved in port operations and entities involved in electricity generation and distribution and promotion of alternative energy sources in Mauritius. Participants will learn from the best practices derived from approaches and experiences of other ports and provide valuable technical insights through expert-led discussions.
The capacity-building workshop will be structured around the following thematic areas:
- Day 1: Policy and strategic framework required for port equipment electrification, including best practices.
- Days 2 & 3
- Technical and operational aspects underpinning port equipment electrification
- Elaboration of an action plan for port equipment electrification.
