Commission on Science and Technology for Development, twelfth session

The Commission will undertake a review of progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) outcomes at the regional and international levels.

The Commission will also address the following substantive themes:

• Development-oriented policies for a socio-economically inclusive information society, including access, infrastructure and an enabling environment
   
• Science, technology and engineering for innovation and capacity-building in education and research
   
• Presentation of reports on science, technology and innovation policy reviews

The twelfth session is open to the following observers:

• Representatives of non-member States of the Commission
   
• Participants from Intergovernmental Organizations
   
• NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC
   
• NGOs, civil society and business entities that were accredited to the World Summit on the Information Society (ECOSOC decision 2008/217, valid for the twelfth and thirteenth session)
   
• Business sector entities including the private sector and academic entities including academies of science and engineering, that had not been accredited to the World Summit on the Information Society, and that have expressed or are expressing the wish to participate in the work of the Commission (ECOSOC decisions 2007/216 and 2008/218). Their participation is subject to prior approval by ECOSOC.

The outcome of the deliberations will be submitted to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
