Body

The event will feature UN-Oceans Members support for ocean and climate objectives. Focusing on building resilience and cross-sector cooperation, it will showcase solutions for people and planet highlighting means of implementation, such as finance, capacity-building and technical assistance.

This side event will focus on how UN-Oceans members are supporting States’ efforts in implementing their ocean and climate change-related goals, such as the NDCs, with a view to increasing resilience and enhancing cross sectoral collaborative approaches, including strengthening the ocean-climate-biodiversity nexus, while also underscoring the value of cultural heritage in sustaining ocean and climate action. In particular, the event will address support in the context of means of implementation, such as finance mechanisms, capacity-building and technology transfer, drawing on the ICJ’s findings in the advisory opinion on climate change on the duties to cooperate and to protect the environment and the applicability of human rights law.

The event will include high-level opening remarks from the United Nations Legal Counsel, and panel presentations and discussions showcasing the work of UN-Oceans members, both individually and collaboratively, to support States, including SIDS, with focus on increasing the resilience of people reliant on and ecosystems in vulnerable regions, oceans and seas, and strengthening financial and institutional mechanisms that support climate action – in line with COP31 Presidency Action Agenda priorities and the Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue outcomes.

Interventions will highlight key processes and activities of members, discuss key opportunities for strengthening collaboration and enhance the visibility of ocean-related issues in the climate context.
