Expert Meeting on Participation of Developing Countries in New and Dynamic Sectors of World Trade: the South–South Dimension

16 - 17 October 2007
Geneva

New and dynamic sectors of trade in a country´s export basket illustrates where it stands in the stages of export diversification (new export sectors) and export specialization (dynamic export sectors).

In addition, a list of new and dynamic sectors traded among the South indicates how and to what extent developing countries incorporate the growth opportunities presented by the emerging South in their export promotion and industrialization policies.

The meeting is expected to shed light on "new realities in the trade geography", through a holistic examination of the new and dynamic sectors of trade in developing countries.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to map out the issues to be tackled at UNCTAD XII, under sub-theme 2, "Key trade and development issues and the new realities in the geography of the world economy", and the interactive debate on South-South trade.

Experts at the meeting are invited to consider the following questions:

  • What do identified new and dynamic sectors of trade reveal with respect to the dynamics of South-South trade?

  • What is the role of the South as a market in promoting new exports in the international economic landscape? What are the positive features and problems of the South as a market, and what are policy measures that can overcome current constraints?

  • What can countries of the South achieve by networking among themselves, e.g. through bilateral, regional and interregional trade agreements, participating in a new global value chain (production sharing), and creating a trade-investment-technology transfer nexus?

  • Can the "emerging seven" developing countries become a locomotive in enhancing South-South trade integration? And what is the importance of markets in developed countries?

  • What are the findings and suggestions arising from cutting-edge research on new and dynamic sectors of trade, the dynamics of South-South trade and their implications to a country´s policymaking?

  • How best can new research findings be linked to policymaking?
Experts are encouraged to prepare brief papers on the subject under discussion. These papers will be made available at the meeting in the form and language in which they are received.
