The Republic of Gabon volunteered to undertake UNCTAD’s Voluntary Peer Review on Consumer Protection Law and Policy.
These reviews provide an external and independent assessment of the effectiveness of consumer protection law and policy; identify the challenges to be addressed and areas to be improved in the legal and institutional frameworks, thereby contributing to enhancing quality, efficiency and consumer protection regimes; assess the consumer protection awareness of relevant stakeholders and their contributions in this area; formulate and recommend appropriate measures, designed in consideration of the economic and developmental particularities of each country, to address these challenges; and assist countries in implementing the recommendations by developing a capacity-building project in consultation with the country concerned.
Gabon will officially launch its review in a public event on 1 December 2022 in the ARAMBO Auditorium in Libreville. The event will gather government officials, industry representatives, consumer groups and academia to raise awareness about this exercise among all interested stakeholders and encourage the improvement of national policies and enforcement mechanism.
Gabon’s review will also encompass a series of interviews in Libreville from 26 November to 2 December to collect information on the legal and institutional frameworks in the country. A background report will follow.
The Peer Review will be held at the seventh session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy on 3 and 4 July 2023.
