E-commerce is booming all around the world, it is also significantly developing in Africa particularly with the increasing availability of technology solutions, IT infrastructure and services supporting e-commerce in general. The challenge for African countries is not only to participate but to make sure that e-commerce generates value added staying that stays in Africa. Indeed, there is a high risk that the development of e-commerce does not generate local value creation.
The powerful impact of the marketing in the value creation generated by e-commerce, the reliance on advanced technologies and the requirement to handle huge data flows contribute to the fact that big operators, profit much more from the value generated as compared to the small local operators. This only leaves a very small space for African players and other developing regions.
As a result of this threat, what should be Africa’s strategy to build its e-commerce environment in order to capture a reasonable part of the value creation generated by its own market?
