As Timor-Leste advances the implementation of its first Competition Law, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Trade Centre (ITC) are supporting the Government in strengthening institutional capacity and raising awareness among key stakeholders.
In this context, a series of activities will take place as part of a joint mission from 20 to 26 May engaging with government representatives, sectoral regulators and local partners. The mission will include dedicated workshops held on 25–26 May 2026 at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Dili, bringing together government officials, business representatives, consumer associations and development partners.
The programme will provide a comprehensive introduction to competition law and policy, covering core concepts such as market power, anti-competitive practices, and institutional frameworks, as well as the practical implications of Timor-Leste’s new legal regime.
The workshops will also highlight the role of business and consumer associations in promoting compliance, fostering a culture of fair competition, and enhancing consumer protection—key elements for well-functioning markets and sustainable economic growth.
By facilitating dialogue among public institutions, the private sector and civil society, the workshops aim to support the effective implementation of the Competition Law and contribute to a transparent, competitive and inclusive market environment in Timor-Leste.
