TrainForTrade conference on digital economy for small island developing States

Meeting Date
5 – 7 November 2025
Location
Singapore, Singapore
Body

Digital technologies and their application in international trade practices have the potential to greatly contribute to the achievement of SDGs. For Small Island Developing States (SIDS), ICT and e-commerce have immense potential for supporting their participation in international and regional markets; building resilience and recovering better from disasters. Despite its importance, digital economy in SIDS is still in its early stage of development. The common challenges in the digital transformation of SIDS include not only the access to affordable digital infrastructure, but also the lack of adequate legal frameworks and digital identity systems which can facilitate the take-up of e-commerce and the transition to a digital economy. Furthermore, the lack of official national statistics on ICT uses and e-commerce constitutes a handicap for the formulation and evaluation of digital development policies. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced pre-existing bottlenecks in the e-commerce ecosystem of SIDS.

As part of its blended learning strategy to strengthen the digital economy of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), TrainForTrade will host the final in-person component of the project: TrainForTrade Blended Learning Strategy to Boost the Digital Economy in Small Island Developing States of Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific.

This concluding event will bring together top participants from the following three TrainForTrade e-learning courses for an engaging multi-day programme:

  • Legal Aspects of E-Commerce
  • Digital Identity for Trade and Development
  • Statistics on the Digital Economy, E-Commerce and Digital Trade

Attendees will take part in expert presentations and interactive discussions as part of this collaborative workshops aimed at developing policy recommendations.
