Since 1983 there has been an International Tropical Timber Agreement. This aims to provide a framework for international cooperation and policy development among producer and consumer countries that can contribute to sustainable resource management and development.
The current agreement expired at the end of 2006 and continued negotiations on a successor agreement will be taking place at UNCTAD in Geneva from 16-27 January 2006.
