The potential positive impact of foreign investment on women's empowerment through the creation of formal employment and business linkages is considerable, but the operations of transnational corporations (TNCs) also risk increasing women's vulnerability in the workplace or exacerbating gender inequality, a new UNCTAD report has found.

Vanuatu prepares to shed 'least developed country' status with UNCTAD-led review of 'green' export opportunities

In the run-up to shedding "least developed country" status in 2017, the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu is working with UNCTAD to revisit their trade policy and develop a national action plan to boost production and export coconut oil, single origin organic cocoa and high quality sandalwood oil, among other "green" products.

According to preliminary estimates by UNCTAD and WTO, in the first quarter of 2014, world exports of services rose by 7%, as compared with the same quarter of the year before (balance-of-payments basis, current prices).
