As part of the project: Facilitation of transit, transport and trade in West Africa for better participation in value chains, a study has been carried out on the Cotonou-Niamey and Lomé-Ouagadougou corridors covering the four beneficiary countries of the project: Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger and Togo, in order to strengthen synergies between institutional players and improve the passage of goods in transit.
This one-off survey, carried out in 2022-2023, identified the obstacles encountered by operators and analysed the bottlenecks along these corridors.
The study looked at a number of aspects, including the deterioration of roads, the effectiveness of juxtaposed checkpoints, and the management of port infrastructures.
As well as highlighting the logistical challenges, the survey highlights the priorities needed to improve infrastructure, facilitate trade and reduce logistical costs.
The report provides key recommendations for countries in the region to facilitate cross-border trade and strengthen their competitiveness within regional and international value chains.
The ultimate goal is to promote deeper integration into the global economy by removing barriers to trade and supporting the implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
