UNCTAD is organizing a special event on the sustainable development of the oil and gas services sector at the World Investment Forum in Geneva.
This event will complement the annual African OilGasMine Conference, which will not take place this year for lack of a host country sponsor. The Conference will return to the continent in 2015.
Under the theme, "Achieving sustainable development goals through investment in oil and gas field services", this special event will focus on the following topics for discussion in two sessions: investment opportunities in Africa's oil and gas field services, and a policy dialogue on maximizing benefits of investments in oil and gas field services.
-
The first session will discuss the investment environment in Africa's oil and gas industries and highlight opportunities in providing field services across the value chain.
-
The second session will examine policy options in promoting indigenous service providers in Africa's oil and gas sector and how to retain the value of services associated with natural resources in host countries.
In this regard, the session will look at ways in which governments can create an enabling legal and regulatory environment that stimulates partnerships with foreign investors in oil and gas field services, transfer of skills, development capacity of local entrepreneurs to deliver competitive services and best practices in measuring and monitoring contribution of local entrepreneurs.
Participation
This special event will bring together ministers and other high-level representatives of governments, senior executives and experts from the oil and gas industry, civil society and the press.
Member States of UNCTAD are requested to help disseminate the information about this special event to the main stakeholders in their countries, thus facilitating their participation.
Participants in this high-level multi-stakeholder meeting will attend in their personal capacities.
Specialized agencies and intergovernmental bodies wishing to take part in the meeting, as well as non-governmental organizations in the general and special categories wishing to attend as observers, are requested to inform the UNCTAD secretariat of the names of their representatives by 1 October 2014.
