The UNCTAD UNDA project “Harnessing trade policy and transport and logistics to build sustainable and resilient food supply chains in the Caribbean and Arab region” addresses the overlapping food, energy, and financial crises, intensified by COVID-19, geopolitical tensions, climate risks, and rising debt in developing regions.
Implemented jointly with UNECLAC and in collaboration with UNESCWA, the project focuses on Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Lebanon, and Morocco. A selection of countries, highly exposed but well positioned to strengthen food security through improved production, trade, and logistics.
National (Trinidad and Tobago) and regional (Caribbean) assessments of transport networks and logistics used for food trade have been conducted, identifying key bottlenecks and proposing actionable recommendations to improve system resilience, sustainability, and regional coordination. They have also identified key capacity building gaps and areas for enhanced collaboration and support.
Building on this work, UNCTAD and UNECLAC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, will hold a national validation workshop on 2 June 2028 in Port of Spain, bringing together public and private stakeholders to review and validate findings, prioritize recommended actions and capacity building requirements. The workshop will be complemented by targeted stakeholder bilateral discussions facilitated by the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism of Trinidad and Tobago.
