Online discussion on poverty eradication and jobs for youth is NOW Open!

19 January 2017

Through UNCTAD's online discussion tool, youth are offered the opportunity to express their opinions on issues related to the creation and development of jobs in view of the upcoming UN ECOSOC 2017 Youth Forum.

From 19 to 23 January 2017, the UNCTAD Youth Network will hold an online discussion on poverty alleviation and jobs for youth.

Young men and women, aged between 18 and 30 who are interested in trade and development topics, can join the five days discussion to give their opinion on the following four questions:

  1. Policies and Youth Entrepreneurship

  2. Skills Development and the Business Leaders of Tomorrow

  3. Inclusive Finance for Youth

  4. Public-Private Action for Youth Self-employment

This online discussion comes as a response to the request made by the youth during the fourteenth Ministerial Conference of UNCTAD in Nairobi in July 2016, under the theme "Shaping the World We Want", UNCTAD created a platform through which young people can share their ideas and discuss topics of concern.

UNCTAD is part of the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth, which is a comprehensive United Nations system-wide effort for the promotion of youth employment.

UNCTAD will also participate in the United Nations ECOSOC 2017 Youth Forum, to be held in New York on 30-31 January 2017 through a thematic breakout session "End poverty in all its forms and create decent jobs for youth", jointly organized with other international organizations under the overall coordination of the International Labor Organization.

The online discussion is directly related to the ECOSOC 2017 Youth Forum, as the topics to be covered are part of the breakout session.

At the end of the discussion, youth will incorporate the outcome into a report, which will be made publicly available.
