SYSTEMIC ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT AGREEMENTS (IIAs)

Geneva, Switzerland, 5 April 2006

UNCTAD has released its new IIA monitor on ´´Systemic Issues in International Investment Agreements´´. The monitor highlights the continuing increase in bilateral and regional investment treaties, as well as the emergence of a new generation of IIAs dealing with a broader set of issues.

As a result of these developments, foreign investors and states are confronted with an ever more complex universe of multilayered and multifaceted investment rules, which requires constant responsiveness to the different kinds of innovations and interactions in and between IIA provisions, as well as between the IIA network and domestic development policies. This represents new challenges for policymakers. UNCTAD´s monitor presents several approaches to addressing these issues in future IIAs.
