Commission on Science and Technology for Development

The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It holds an annual intergovernmental forum for discussion on timely and pertinent issues affecting science, technology and development.

Its members are composed of national Governments, however civil society contributes to discussions which take place. Strong links exist with other UN bodies (The Commission on Status of Women, Regional Commissions, ITU, UNESCO).

Outcomes of the CSTD include providing the United Nations General Assembly and ECOSOC with high-level advice on relevant science and technology issues.

UNCTAD is responsible for the substantive servicing of the Commission.

Postponement of the twenty-third session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development

Following consultations and advisories in view of the evolving situation concerning the coronavirus (COVID-19), a decision has been taken to postpone the twenty-third session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, originally scheduled to take place from 23 to 27 March 2020. New dates will be set as soon as possible.

The decision was taken in consultation with the Chair of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development on appropriate measures to mitigate public health risks. It takes into account the need to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, guidance provided by the Economic and Social Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the advice of the World Health Organization, and the authorities of the host country.

The UNCTAD secretariat will keep all participants informed and updated regarding forthcoming decisions on the new meeting dates for the Commission. We appreciate your support and understanding.
