UNCTAD pledges support to Arab free trade quartet

The UN trade and development body signs a memorandum of understanding with the technical unit of the Agadir Agreement – a free trade area between Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia

UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi has signed in Geneva a memorandum of understanding with the technical unit of the Agadir Agreement, pledging support to the members of the free trade area – Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia – to help them trade better with each other and with the rest of the world.

Under the agreement, also signed by the Fakhry Alhazaimeh, the Agadir Agreement Technical Unit’s executive director, UNCTAD will provide the four countries technical assistance and capacity building in the following areas:

  • Commercial diplomacy

  • Trade in services policies

  • Non-tariff measures

  • Competition and consumer protection policies

  • Green export sectors

UNCTAD signs MoU with Agadir Agreement 

UNCTAD will also work with the countries on regional economic trade integration negotiations and processes, including in the framework of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia signed the Agadir Agreement on 25 February 2004 in Rabat, Morocco. It entered into force on 6 July 2006, creating a market of more than 150 million people with a combined domestic product of nearly €200 billion.
